All I've had are bottom drilled with stand pipes. If I had my way I'd drill the back with bean animal and coast to coast overflow. Plumbing and aesthetics would be so much better
I'm afraid there was no room for any box, external, where it wouldn't be obnoxious. Being in the foyer, everyone who comes in sees this tank first thing. This tank is only 1/2" or less from the wall (my wall isn't perfect.)
Just enough room on the back for an air hose and wires.
My 220G in the living room, I run a BeanAnimal Overflow into a sump and my 3 drains are drilled into the side glass, with a custom made overflow box inside the tank. My return line also on the other side glass of the tank. This was mainly done to keep the tank as closer to the walls and fear of drilling 3 +1 holes and damaging a larger back glass..
