Hi all, got my silver 4 days ago, he is doing fine and no worrys now i have got rid of the oscar i had.
He has taken bloodworm withou any problems except they sink once they defrost in the tank, i soak them for a minute then add a cube, he gets what he can until it sinks to the bottom then doesnt bother.
He has atken live crickets and floating pellets.

Now i have 2 rays with him and i feed them prawn peaces, he doesnt take them when sinking but when they are on the bottom, he seems to like these more than anything, he has taken maybe a large prawn plus a cricket in one feeding, he is about 5 inch long.

The bit that has puzzled me is how he goes to the bottom to take the prawn, he goes upto it and turns his head so he takes it sideways on.

Anyone else have this happen, if so is it bad for them as it must mean they are looking down a lot to see it.

thanks wayne

my aro would take chunks of shrimp off the bottom. i dont see this as a problem if he still eats and swims normally.

Good, wasnt worryed just a bit curious, also the droop eye concerned me a bit as if he is looking down to see the food then it could make it worse.
He is fine all around, getting very confident around the other fish already, he went to snatch a bit of prawn of a dollar a minute ago...not quick enough though.

If he gets used to eating foods off the bottom, That is definatly one of the main contributers to drop eye. Personally, I wouldnt risk it and would start training him to take food from the top, so his eyes look up for foods like they are suppose to naturally instead looking downwards and having to contort himself to eat it.
Some say drop eye is just poor genetics/poor diet, But I dont trust it. http://arowanaclub.com/stories.php?story=03/01/14/2046318

I cant solve this problem by doing what i have been for the rays and feed them by tongues so theres no spare food about, that should help out.

My 5 year old RTG has been eating food off the bottom of the tank since I've had him. He regularly picks up worms, scraps of shrimp and massivore or NLS pellets.

No drop eye. 5 years old.

Don't worry about it. Arowanas in the wild regularly hunt river shrimp on the river bed. They hunt fish in midwater.
