Bottomless tank in pond Idea!!

Besides a vacuum, couldn't one just use a valve and manual pump, like a reverse bicycle hand-pump?

They make hand vacuum pumps that are basically reverse bicycle pumps. The only problem is they are limited on the amount of vacuum they can pull. Whatever you used would need to be able to pull enough vacuum to lift the weight of the water in the tank. A 30g tank still has about 250lbs of water in it.

Plus a tank is meant to withstand pressure trying to get out, not pressure trying to get in. Creating a vacuum inside strong enough to lift that much weight into the tank is going to be quite a strain i suspect.

I have a vacuum pump that will do it. You need to get an hvac vac pump you could create enough vacuum to boil water at room temperature and they are not horribly expensive. You will have a strength problem with the tank, the tube for the vacuum pump you could run from the top inside under the edge and back up. I would look to see if you could have an acrylic bowl built for you. It would be more asthetically pleasing, and easier to deal with.

:iagree: The turtle(s) would pose a problem. Air spaces left in the bottomless tank have significantly lower oxygen contents because they come into equilibrium with the level in the water.

However, turtles have much longer durations between breaths. And they don't wait for the last second before taking their next breath (we don't either). As long as they can figure out where they can breathe and not, they should be fine. They will need to be supervised to make sure they can figure it out.

I would think that you would have to vacuum pump frequently. the turtles respirating and even bubbles from the fish and or turbulence would result in air coming up to the tank wouldnt it? perhaps a little air up top in it is a solution to your other potential problems though?
