Yup. The impeller/magnet off the used one was slightly pitted, but I didn't think that would cause all the noise I was hearing. After several motor cleanings with minimal success, I finally broke down and ordered a new impeller assembly off Amazon for around $35 if I remember correctly. and VOILA! the FX5 is silent. I suppose I should be thankful that it was only that and not the entire motor assembly.
In a way it was nice to get to know my filter in better detail. This is by far the most advanced filter I've ever owned, so it's probably best that I understand it's workings.
Regardless, thanks to all of you for your input. It's always much appreciated.
