I was at my LFS yesterday and he had some female Jacks the only problem was he had an ICK break out in one of his towers. So figuring that I have a hospital tank setup already I bought 2 and started treating with Tetra Pond Treatment and temp at 82-84. The question I have is after treatment for a few weeks and observation for a couple more, Do I risk infecting with potential mates or would I be in the clear? also do I need to clean out the hospital tank like all the way to dry bare bottom tank afterwards? Now I know there are threads on ICK already I just want some person opinions from people that have successfully dealt with it. All info is appreciated and Thanks in advance

Ick is easy to cure.

Just keep them alone. Raise temps to 30cs plus, aerate.

Add some aq salt ( 1 tablespoon per five gallons )

Ick is always present in the tanks. It just manages to infect the fish when they get stressed.

Only way to try to get rid of it is leave the tank without fish for a couple of months.

I already started Tetra Pond Treatment(used it before had no problems is intense but still no problems)... So should i put in the carbon and do a water change and start with high temp and salt or continue with what im doing? Thanks Miguel

Just up the temps and skip the salt, since you are using tetra.

Have the spots disappeared already?

yea they have started to i noticed fewer of them on one fish and on the other they're almost completely gone

Good!

Thanks a lot Miguel also I didn't know that it was present at all times I thought without a host that it died off guess i was wrong.... so does that mean i run the risk of my electric blue males that I'll eventually put with them coming down with a bad case of it cause i know they are very susceptible to problems

I don't think there are any dormant stages for ich. If you run a tank at 86-87+ F for a number of days, the parasites in the tank should be fully eradicated. If any new fish are purchased and are quarantined in a separate tank with similar treatments, they should be equally free of the parasite. Ich can also be added to tanks through infected filter media, gravel, plants, water etc. when they are in 2 of their 3 life stages. (1 stage is when attached to a fish, the others are free swimming and as an 'egg' dividing into new free swimmers.)

Ich does have an extremely long life cycle if kept at low temperatures and many fish are added to tanks with a sub clinical infection, so it can appear as if it's endemic.

Stress does not cause ich but it might cause a sub clinically infected fish to accelerate the infection it has. That's why quarantine and eradication before introduction to a community is preferred.
