Hey All,
One of my lfs has a nice one and am tempted to buy it...however I'd like to get your feedback on its temperment...I'm keeping in mind that its a cichlid! This speciman is roughly 8-9in and I was thinking about putting it in my 300 gallon (check sig for tankmates)
Lfs guy said I should be ok...but I want other opinions....
thanks!

They can be very aggressive when in spawning mode. I have no personal experience, but they might be OK with your stocking.

thanks Paraoh, I've been reading that they can be aggressive and eat small fish-but generally a less aggressive cichlid...I am aware they can grow to 2ft...but I want to see if anyone has any personal experiences with them.....

anyone???

one other question...for a 9in speciman...does $100 sound reasonable? or a rip off???
let me know..

My current emp is 14" and I've had 3 others in the past. They don't like each other much but will get along with other tankmates for the most part if you give them enough room. I've found that they usually like to chase one or two tankmates and leave the rest along. Its hit or miss.

$100 is too much IMO. I've found that they grow 2" a month while young so find a small one and grow him out. Hope that helps.

I would think you might be able to find a better price.

I would love to get one for $100. But that's just beacause I can't get anything decent for under $100 around here.
Awesome fish, on my wish list. I'll be stayin posted on this one.

KNH-yeah, I've read that they don't do well with small numbers of their own kind...this would be the only one in the tank...what do you have for tankmates with this guy...
so huh, I thought this was a little steep for this fish...but the price on a lot of things are going up...sucks...never saw this fish before in my area, so I'm on the fence right now on if I should buy it or not...sorta leaning towards no at the moment =(

I have him with a variety of tankmates. GG, cigar barbs, mbu puffer, niger cat, flagtail, sexfasciatus, leporinus, knives, african haps etc.

The price is high but its a matter of supply and demand. You can always try to bargain with him. FYI - I gave away my 3 others, two were around 12" and one at 17".
