Bowfin and Tank pics.

I'm real surprised he stayed still long enough and posed for you!

Mine bolts when I look at him.

I really like the algae in the tank, that really looks natural, I will have to grab some from my pond this summer and add it to my tank. I get no algae now as there is no direct sunlight in the garage.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, he actually comes to the front of the glass to meet me, probably because he knows its feeding time.

Awsome fish! Very impressive that you are successfully keeping your Bowfin at "tropical" temperatures. I had zero success with keeping any of my Bowfins at warmer temperatures and have resolved to keeping all of my bowfin in unheated aquaria/ ponds!

The ones that I had that did survive in temps. over 70 F had aggression levels towards their tankmates totally off the chart. Absolutely NOTHING in the way of tankmates (including Gar) were not obliterated by my Bowfin at trop. temps!

I have found cooler temperatures required to provide a possible "community" setting that includes Bowfin. Even then only extremely hardy and tough tankmates have survived the onslaught.

Fantastic job! Any chance of a picture of your bowfin with the Buenos Aires tetras in their immediate proximity? That would blow most of our minds and be "sticky" worthy!

Thanks! Actually there is no heater in the tank, the temp now is room temp so its maybe 65 in the basement. The Pleco and Buenos Aries don't seem to be affected by the temp that low. There are also now 4 tetras left they just disappear but I did see him catch one when I turned the lights on the other night so when they do get that close to him they get swallowed fast. I need to mention that there were 8 of them before he got to the tank :naughty:. I noticed a few confrontations with the pleco in the beginning with the plec responding as they normally do, flaring out of fins and head on and profile shoving match but that has been a while now, I think the bowfin has realized at least for now at his current size that the plec will hold its own especially when it tries to push him around while its in its cave.

I did finally remove all the Dats and put them in an Empty 55 until I sell them. As for future plans and tank mates, I need driftwood in there for better decor and prob some floating vegetation like lily pads. Tankmates will be what I collect from the creek behind my parents house like Dace, suckers, creek chubs and small crays that he can chow down on. Yes everything I put in there will be for his leisure eating pleasure. But if anyone has any driftwood that lives nearby that they want to get rid of or sell cheap I'm game!
