Bowfin Attack

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
mine did this and my bigger female killed 2 of the 4 i lost recently, one explored the world of filter intakes and then she beat one up and my cuban joined in. then after i separated it it didn't make it after 2 days. its tail was like yours but it had alot of body damage also. i have noticed with bowfins once one figures out it is a badass it will never go back. i hope your will relax though.

Ive seen this w/ other species.. May try removing the aggressor for awhile, then reintroduceing once the tanks shifted around abit. Sometimes it works. But yeah, once a fish starts harassing tank-mates its usually game over for the comm working.

I raised 2 groups of bowfin one group of 16 one group of 20 these things were super aggressive to each other ended up with one out of each group. Put them both in my NA predator tank. They came in the tank trying to bully the other fish but both were killed by my bigmouth sleepers, but ony after they killed my jade sleepers.

yep. Mine are supper aggressive to eachothet nut no other fish.

wow.... thats scary that makes me question if i wanna put a bowfin into my native tank, that is some really serious damage

note side from sunfish, my bowfins have not messed with any other fish. they seem to be aggressive toward each other, but tend to leave others alone. it would be risky, but imo worth the risk in the end.

My experience has been different, prior to this incident, the bowfins weren't really bugging each other, just a few nipped fins. Other fish were killed in some cases. Gars are almost completely ignored, just some nipped fins, but that could likely be from anything in there.

As an update, this fin has been moved to a hospital tank. Added some salt. Last I checked she was scoping out her new tank.

Not sure if this might have anything to do with the attack but the temps have been pretty high lately. Been getting to almost 90F just from the ambient room temperature and the pumps running. Still think its the male that is being aggressive, as all the other females seem to be avoiding him.
