Could he move the bowfin to the 300 and the small gar to the 125 temporarily?

Yes i could but is it still a risk for my other 19" fish?

i've not had bowfin before as the are scarcely available here, so i would just follow the advice given in the link above. i personally wouldn't take the risk. are you looking to sell the bowfin or do you just want to get rid of it? if it's the latter and you haven't found success advertising a free fish, have you tried contacting public aquariums?

sorry to get to this late, but i will throw in my two cents:

- i would be concerned for the small gar vs the large bowfin if they are all put together. a large bowfin can easily swallow or at least kill a gar that small (assuming the size estimates are close approximations).

- other than the small gar, you could try the combo and just see how things go. is your large bowfin currently being kept with anything else? i know you had it with a gar sometime back...how was that after a few months? was there any particular reason why they were separated? based on how it has gotten along with other tankmates in the past, you can make a call on whether it is worth the risk again.

if you don't want the fish you may want to consider posting and selling it, as many people are usually after bowfins as big (and therefore stable ones) are hard to come by in the hobby.

hope that helps - as an aside, i'm surprised the TSN leaves the small gar alone? assuming they are all just well-fed? good luck--

To bad I wasn't closer Id take it, also assuming multiple Bowfin could get along...

From what I have read, and after some past conversations with John (snookn21) keeping large bowfin together does not work out. John caught a handful and they were very rough on each other and needed to be separated.

whats the temperment of your bowfin? if uv been feeding live foods its whole life then no. but if its a well manered fish, then go for it. The amount of bottom dwelling specimens in your tank is kind of high. But honestly I'd move the bowfin in to the 300.

yeah, this is the general consensus about large bowfin together in the home aquarium, and unless it's a large setup in a public aquarium, one can probably extrapolate this behavior to other situations.

keeping bowfin with tankmates is generally risky, keeping them with conspecifics is generally accepted to be a high risk setup and no advised--

thanks everyone. I am not going to try it. can someone give me some advice about shipping a 19" fish so that it arrives in good health?
