i cant see the big bowfin in the first couple pics.

The young surround the male when startled. The male is right in center of the mass of young. If the group is left undisturbed, the young will allow you see the male. The young don't seem to stray more than a foot away from the male.

The last two pics are the 2" fish. No photos here of the adult.
