Thanks guys. The younger ones (smaller ones) had false eye spots on the tail area. Wish I got a picture of one.

that was a female bowfin that you caught...the ones with the eye spot are males the females don't get that spot...they are fun to catch and have a nice set of teeth...

bowfin, anal fin does not cover the majority of the lower body as it does on snakeheads

yup good ole bowfin. Call em Grennel round here. Or Cotton Eyed Joes. Thats super slang right there. Its because you have to fillet em within so many hours or the meat just turns to a cotton like texture and is uneditable . Just in case yall wanted a history lesson. First time I caught one didnt know what it was, tried to lip it!
