i beleive im getting a large tank for xmass, i recenly came across some info on bowfin, and they seemed like interesting fish. ize wonderin if anybody had any expirience with these, and if they are a good choice for a aquarium (180g+). also if there is a place in/near NH to find them

Check your local laws regarding collecting your own. Bowfin are usually unprotected species. The 180 should be good for quite awhile if you can find a small specimen.

i dont beleive there are any rules bout it. but i dont think bowfin live in my area. My plan for the tank would be to stock it with rare native fish that live in my area. the 180 would be temporary till i build a tank, or put them in my grandparents BF pond

If they are not indigenous to that area, I would call your local DNR and ask if they are a restricted species. These fish are often considered undesirables, as they eat primarily fish. Many anglers believe that these fish consume small gamefish, which makes them undesirable. They have a bad rep in my area, although I think they are not as detrimental to gamefish populations as some may believe and are a truly monster native fish.

from what i understand, they are indigenous but only the western part of my state. and in few numbers. the bowfin isnt a restricted species in NH, the only restricted species we got i beleive are salmon. im also interested in the bullhead catfish, theres a small (literaly 20 foot by 15 foot) resevoir type thing full of them near my house, so id like to take one from their for my native species tank.

Isn't it true that new hampshire has a list of fish that you can legally keep and that's it?? no exceptions?? (either it's new hampshire or maine) that list thereby would make all natives illegal to keep.

if thats so i havent heard of it, i searched and all i found was releasing fish, i aint sayin ur wrong, lemme know where u found the info

Well, I'm new to keeping bowfin as well. I've got a male around 6 inches long, and he is a madman! I've had mine around a month now and he has Already eaten one of its tankmates and it is an EXTREMELY timid fish. I have to slowly approach tank, or else it freaks out and slams around the tank. Very quirky feeding it. It readily takes large "nightcrawler" worms I get at a local bait store. It has taken some shrimp, but mostly spits them out. Very strange fish indeed.

bowfin are abundant in my area and i have caught several in excess of 24", and have seen pictures of one just under 30".

you will defiantly will want a bigger tank for a bowfin if you want to keep it for life.

I have raised a few of them over the years and they are still one of my all time favorite fish and by far my favorite native.
