bowfin

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have heard they are good to eat, but up here they are looked at like garbage and alot(way to many) people catch them and kill them just because they think they are junk fish that kill game fish. it is sad really.

they are all on shrimp and squid and other sea foods now. i am still trying to get a video of them. they are freakin sweat!!

Id love to get my hands on a few. Still no luck for me.

Let me know what happens with this, I'd really like to see one. I have no idea what I could tank him with though... maybe spotted gar and cats?

I have kept my Bowfins with Longnose Gar, Florida Gar with success.

I have had some issues between gars and both (Bullhead & Channel Catfish). Catfish barbells are usually history with Gar. I have never triad to home a Bowfin with a Bullhead catfish, but do keep one with a channel catfish. The Bowfin terrorizes the Channel catfish at eating time, but has never done and serious permanent damage to it. I have had extreme ranging results with Bowfin and Green Sunfish. I have had both of my bowfins devour and shred them. I also have at least one Green Sunfish homed with each Bowfin perfectly for well over a year? No idea what the trigger mechanism is (It is NOT size, as the Bowfins have both taken out large Greenies!)

hey every one,

i have made a vid, but i can't find the cord to connect it to the computer. as soon as i find the cord i will post it.

i see them with bullheads a lot, they use them for cover and a food source. i have them with a smaller channel cat right now and no issues. i also have 3(2 males and 1 female) in my main display with; 2 florida gar, 1 shortnose gar, 6 silver arowanas, 1 tsn, 1 rtcxtsn, 1 pumkinseed, 1 smallmouth bass, 2 convicts, 1 s.a. lungfish, 1 endli bichir, 1 ornate bichir, 2 sen bichirs, i may be missing something, but i think thats the list as of right now.

sunfish are a big part of there wild diet so the attacks on the sunfish are to be expected. around me if there are bowfins in the lake find the mass sunfish school and you'll find bowfins.

Yes, given the RTCxTSN catfish & Bowfins, I would count on "missing" your Senegal Bichirs and Convict cichlids before they are fully grown!

actually the sens are going into a different tank and the convicts are food so it is all good. the convicts are 5" or so and the sens are 9". the tank that everything is in right now is a grow out. they will be in a pond after they out grow this tank. i have already lost/fed 2 convicts and a channel catfish to the hybrid. i have 2 channel cats, an acara catfish, and 6 florida gars growing out in another tank to add to the mix as time dictates. when i see any aggression toward the sens from anything they will be taken out. i watch the tank for hours every day and i have other people watching it as well.

i also have a 5-6" IT dat in there aswell. i knew i was missing something in the list. i have had everything in my stock list before and i know what i am going to expect. i have been keeping fish for years. i do some calculated risks and most work, some don't, but i am prepared if they don't work.
