Box turtle invaded my yard

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you could set a place of your yard apart for it, with a fence or something to keep your dog away. Want it to stay around? Easy, just make some of your yard a wild place, dont discart fallen leaves, put some hidding places like hollowed logs or briks, and you can plant things such as strawberrys, ferns and blackberrys to give food and shelter.

coura said some good info, but the only thing i would add would be watch for fertilizer and yard chemicals. not to steal your thunder coura :)

eh turtle soup is old hat, as im in cajun country.
besides locals only use RES and Snappers for soup.

yea i thought bout fencing him him cuz i have a garden i dont want him to eat from lol, i was afraid he would just dig his way out......cuz he must have dug himself in.

set up some old stones with wood over for shade, and i watter the lawn twice a week.........hope it doesnt attract snakes to his spot.

thanks everyone!

Whatever will draw worms & slugs, he'll appreciate that.

As for the soup talk, one of their regular diets is toadstools, box turtle meat can be variably toxic depending on their diet.

Your dog may not even pay it any attention, I doubt he could crack it or force its "box" open, but I did run across a subadult Eastern box who'd been pretty well gnawed on by something. Most of his scutes were torn away...he didn't recover.

Take a pic, we'd at least be able to ID him as native vs. a escaped/released pet.

^ Yep, it's not a good idea to eat any of the Terrapene carolina subspecies for that very reason.

One of my female box turtles was gnawed on by a dog so yes a dog can do some damage to the shell if it isn't taken away ASAP.
