I too would be a tad concerned about them digging thier way out. Maybe they dont do it now but they may in the future.

Your absolutley right, they could start digging. That's why I check on them every couple of hours when I'm home. They've been in their new pen for about a week now and so far so good. They have been doing some light digging, trying to escape the heat. I just took these shots a few minutes ago. When it gets too hot out, they become more active in the evening.

Thats awsome, very rarely do we see hobbyists willing to try and re-establish a wild population where they actually belong!

I'm just trying to keep their numbers up the only way I know how. I'm just glad my state passed a new law that says you can't keep them without a permit and that your not aloud to take anymore from the wild. A lot of people take them home and have no idea what is needed to keep them healthy.

A step in the right direction! Do you get a permit then?

That was my next question.

Your set up is the best ive seen so far for BT's. Keep up the great work!

Thanks! And yes, I have a permit. It's good for the animals life.

Are there any legalities when it comes to releasing them into the wild? I know that with some species over here, there are certain restrictions as to how many/what time of year/if you can release animals into "the wild".

I don't really know the legalities of it. I just release them into the woods behind my house. It's along part of the Appalchian(sp*) Trail. I have given a few babies to other people who have box turtles.

:WHOA:Well...now that the cat's out of the bag, I hope the EPA doesn't come knocking on my door!

next time there is one in your yard, you should move it somewhere so that your dogs cant get to it, and conisder purchasing a captive bred boxturtle instead

Wow, very nice easterns and pen.

They really aren't that common anymore, it's too bad...very cool that you breed & release them, do you grow them out at all or just release the hatchlings?
