BP tank mates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Silver dollars are tough fish but your 55 will be looking very cramped when they grow. I kept 3 of the redhook SD's in a 90 gallon and felt it was too small, the way they swim doesn't lend itself well to small spaces. Most here will tell you a 6' tank is necessary, and having kept them in smaller, I'd agree. Could perhaps get some small ones and replace when they get larger, wouldn't be a good long term solution though.

Thats kinda what I meant get like 3 inch ones and grow them up and replace them but I think the true answer to the animate dilemma is upgrade tank size. This enables more water volume and more importantly more space and more territory for the fish to claim

Yup!!! I'm only 8 months in and the BP was my 6 year old's choice at the pet store. I have to keep it alive and healthy.

I would go for a bottom feeder type fish that would stay out of the BP's way. I would possibly try a redtail shark they are aggressive and stay near a different region of the tank. Just get the largest you can find. You can get maybe some pictus catfish instead of the redtail shark also but same thing get biggest you can find. Oh also Synodontis catfish can fit also like a Featherfin. Good luck!

Had a few pictus but they succumbed to Ich despite my best efforts. Been having some good luck with bristle nose in a different 55g.

Thanks

With a 55 you're kind of limited. Swordtails, platies and mollies should work. BPs get big and chunky too. Aggression wise they're all over the map, but usually get more territorial as they grow. Depending on genetics they can max out anywhere from 5-10 inches with space, clean water and good food. They're what I call a "cube" fish...they grow in 3D not just length. I've seen 'em big as small pumpkins.

Some have teeth, some don't. Parrots are a 'box o' chocolates' to quote Forrest Gump. You never know what you're gonna get.

And those teeth aren’t always just for show. Mine would scratch his against the glass. That guy could do some damage.
