So I will be redoing my fishroom when I move in a few weeks and I've decided to do away with the Island of Misfit tanks and do something a bit more uniform. From two 4x8 sheets of 1/4" glass I can make 3 32x32x16" tanks of about 70 gallons each - perfect for 3 - high breeder racks.

I used the Garf calculator and it says 1/4" glass (6mm), some of the metric calculators say 5mm would do. Anyone have any direct experience with the GARF calculator (is it minimal or safe side?)

For those who have done it, do I need to brace these tanks at the top? The GARF tank build calculator say yes - a 2" wide brace front to back and sinde to side. I suppose I would just affix one of them 1/4" under the rim and the other one over it at the rim.

Seems awkward as my tanks are by nature very utilitarian and I envision jumping from one 15x15 hole to another trying to net fish out.

For this size tank are those cross braces needed? Is there a relatively easy way to frame them instead - even if it is running a 1" strip of glass around the rim?

Ideas welcome, please differentiate between "I have an idea" and "I have lots of practice with this and KNOW what is required :-)

Thanks!
