San Francisco, Ca
Hello. New to the board.
I live in San Francisco, CA and recently decided to start up a tank. After buying a 40 gallon, setting up the tank and letting it run for 48 hours i went out to buy fish from a local family owned shop near China Town. There i found EELS with the price tag naming them FRESHWATER MORAYS. I immediately bought 2, asked what they eat and what they need, bought that and left. When i got home i researched and found that they are NOT freshwater and need Brackish water. 2 days later i have set up the Brackish tank with everything i need, but I'm not sure how to Introduce them to the brackish water. help would be GREAT!!! i don't want to partake in them suffering in anyway.
Thank You!
-Brad

Freshwater or brackish aside, first things first. You said you set up a tank and "ran it" for 48 hours. So, are we talking about an UNcycled tank?

You have to cycle your tank before you can add fish. It takes a little patience but it's something you have to do. Realize that if you add fish before your tank is cycled, you're just wasting money because your fish WILL die. Search cycle and you will get all the info you need. If you have any questions, just post on this site. Everyone will try to help you. Good luck, The Doctor.

truth be told, they don't do well long term in brackish.
They really need full saltwater.
my 3 footer didn't eat for over 3 months until he was acclimated to full salt.

Maybe you could find a LFS to give them to while you do your research on cycling & then do a FISHLESS CYCLE? That will also give you time to research fish species & their requirements.

Do you have a picture of the morays? Like Jeox said, they are more than likely going to do better in full saltwater, or at least for now a heavy brackish. And yes, you'll need the tank to be cycled before you introduce them to brackish.

came from good lfs as freshwater fish in w/ 2 albino oscars. i used a cycled fw tank and added salt slowly. had a small cycle from adjusting water parameters to meet needs. no one seems to mention adjusting ph to 7.5 - 8 as you go from fresh to brack and eventually marine.

Adding salt should help raise the pH & you need a substrate of aragonite sand to buffer it to around a steady 8. Also, if you raise the SG no more than .002/week, there will be no "small cycle".
