Alrighty, I've got a 55 gal tank that I'm working on setting up as BW. I'm hopefully going to get it set up and cycling sometime in the next couple weeks so it's time to start figuring out what fish to get! This is my first BW tank and while I've been doing a ton of research on it, any and all input/suggestions is welcome.
The plan so far:
2 dragon gobies
3 fig8 puffers
possibly a couple bumblebee gobies

I love scats and monos too but I think 55 gal is a little small for them and I'd be nervous about them getting nipped up by the puffers. Any suggestions out there of additional fish I could add?

I think that should work fine as long as you have good filtration. Might possibly look at orange chromides or fandancer gobies. Only problem I could see is your dragon gobies getting enough food. They seem to be slow eaters from what I've seen. -would love to see some pics.

Sounds like a good plan. It's so nice to hear someone doing their research & not overstuffing their tank!

Thanks Fishtex! I like those orange chromides. I've never seen those around before but I might try a couple if I can find them!

Thanks fishpunk! Those articles were really helpful. Couple quick questions. The place I'm planning on getting my F8's and DG from keeps their SG at 1.009. First of all is that a little to high? also should I cycle my tank at the same SG? Will the puffers go after algae wafers and sinking pellets? I'd like to try feeding those during the day for my DG and bloodworms/brine shrimp for the puffers and then adding some bloodworms or brine shrimp after lights out for the DG. I want to make sure my babies get a well rounded diet! I'm also in the processes of setting up a planted FW community tank that's going to double as a snail hatchery!

Good call on the snails, as puffers have ever growing beaks. Also, I'd say 1.009 is fine. If the fish are already in that SG, no sense lowering it. My Ceylon puffer has his at 1.022. Oh, and as for puffers eating pellets... maybe. It all depends on the individual fish. My Fahaka loves his pellets, but my Ceylon will not touch them. Good luck with the tank!

Most puffs won't eat pellets but I have had a few who did. DGs love the blackworms. Ate whatever fell out of the feeder.

Here's more info on feeding puffers:

Cycle the tank at the SG the fish are at in he store (usually FW), then you can slowly raise it throughout the next couple of months.

(I don't think your pMs are enabled.)

Ok! We are making some progress. Got the tank set up and sand on the bottom and water in it. The sand really made a mess even after washing it (washing 60 pounds of sand is no picnic) so I'm letting the dust settle and filter out for awhile. Once the water clears up (probably will need to do a big water change too) I'm going to add the salt and get 'er cycling.
Things I still need:
Lid
Decor (rocks, plants, etc)
Filter cartridge
Maybe a power-head?
photo.php
?

I wouldn't make the sandbed deeper than 1" or you're going to have to stir it every week, to prevent anerobic air pockets from forming.
