Brackish Riparium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah I sure would like to include archers, but this setup will be open-top so that would not work. I have heard that they jump and also it wouldn't be so good to have salty water squirting all over the place.

This shot shows the foliage on that 2-year old black mangrove plant.

Nothing too remarkable about the leaves on this plant... Like most kinds of mangroves, black mangrove has leathery foliage.

Last night I moved some more things around to make room in the 40 breeder. I can start getting the mangroves into there soon. I am not going to add salt right away because I want to spend some time conditioning some livebearers in the first, but I can work on growing up the mangroves some more anyway in the meantime.

Finally I cleared some space and got the tank set up. This is a 30 breeder.

I have these really great manzanita stumps that I am going to use in here. I have not yet had them in an aquarium and I stuck them in there to start leaching the organics out and get them to sink.

Now I need to go get some aragaonite sand for the bottom of the tank.

This is going to be a simple setup with some nice fish and plants.

This is gonna be cool, man... Can't wait to see you start to put it together. So the black mangrove can go both ways?

Do you have any plans for larger hanging planters as the mangroves and other trees grow?

Hey there is a larger planter, but it's not in the catalog. I can PM you about that. Really the "small" planter is plenty big for most plants and there are a only a few that seem to do better in the "large". I have had these black mangroves here going in the small planter all along and they are 24"+ tall and still growing just fine.

I understand that yes black mangrove should be able ot grow well in moderately salty brackish water. I have been gorwing these all along in freshwater, so I am definitely going to raise the salinity nice and slow.

I got a new series of shots of this project. I'll have more soon.
