why don't you like to use salt?
Because there is no reason for us to use any salt with African Rift Lake cichlids or any other FW fish. There are many people who continue to use salt believing it can prevent diseases which is half the truth. While it does destroy most pathogens particularly ich, it also enables them to develop resistance once they become adapted to the presence of salt especially when used for a long time. Adding salt in any form to a FW setup is a plain waste of time and money, period.

As far as brackish conditions are concerned, African cichlids are not brackish. Furthermore, you need marine salt, not "aquarium" salt in order to replicate brackish and marine conditions. Hydrometers and refractometers are also recommended yet most people rely on the amount of salt per tablespoon/teaspoon to indicate salinity which in short, is extremely dangerous to the fish's health as the salinity is not accurately measured.

There is too much myths albeit BS being spread around the hobby especially by salt companies who debunk the fact that table salt does help to destroy pathogens just to help promote their own fancy packages at the cost of the hard earned cash by fellow hobbyists. Anything about iodide and other additives found in table salt being harmful is a myth, no more, no less. You can use table salt to treat ich for a fraction of the cost of "aquarium" salt.

It's my understanding that it's NOT just salt in the water but the fluxuation of salt that creates a fluxuation in the salinty(dissolved salt) of the water that makes it difficult for fungal or bacterial life in an aquarium enviorment.

In otherwards you start your salinty with 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of water the next water change you decrease the doseage to 1 teaspoon or 1/3 tablespoon or 1/2 tablespoon per each 5 gallons of new water but each time there after never return to 1 tablespoon per 5 gal unless your fish are truely sick..........this keeps the salinity unstable and makes it difficult for pathogens to spawn or transfer when adding new fish. I use this system...............no sick fish.

Brackish as aforementioned in the previous post is a whole new animal. Brackish occurs naturally when major freshwater ways meet the seas or oceans.
