Ok so as some of you may know, about a year ago I got rid of all of my fish and aquariums. Part of the reason for this was that I was a little overwhelmed with school, but some was due to me reading an article online saying that these "brain eating amoebas" could possibly be in my tanks. Now I am contemplating setting up an aquarium again, but these little things are still in the back of my mind! I realize how stupid and pathetic this my sound but are they really in our tanks? And if they are they really that dangerous? Haha sorry for this but I had to ask! :/

While it is possible, it's mostly unlikely. I'd say 1 in 50,000 chance(just throwing this out here)

Odds in the US are actually over 100,000,000 to 1. Of those cases, over 95% are from contaminated recreational water, with 2 from a geothermal drinking water supply (un-chlorinated). So don't swim and bring your own drinking water when camping and you should eliminate the chance.

Ya I am constantly seeing on the news about the zombie infestation in our country caused by aquarium water ....oh wait never mind must have been something I saw on some tinfoil on the head ,for basement trolls only website

all the cases of "brain eating" amoebas/death occur after swimming in the infected water & they enter peoples' nasal passages.

:-o

my question ....does it happen to more than 1-2 people a decade in the civilized world....:) to me it's kinda like worrying about space junk killing you....might wanna be more concerned about your ammonia.. nitrite , nitrate
