Brakish tank algae and green water

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
aragonite substrate, no sunlight at all hit that tank, mostly vals as plants. and the only problem with frequent water changes is that salt is expensive here for good quality marine salt.

Fish keeping is expensive. I understand though. Look into a good chemical algae remover? Or, Siphon is out? Pictures would help.

I always had a hair algae problem in my BW tank. Never knew why. Rarely in my FW/SW tanks. Mollies ate most of it.

That Columbian is a schooling species that grows to 18". Water changed are as MUST. You have to be able to afford to keep your fish healthy if you're going to be in this hobby! What's your nitrate/phosphate levels?

ALGAE FIX BY API I PROMISE YOU I TRIED NO LIGHTS WATER CHANGES LOWERING AMOUNT OF FOOD AND ACCUCLEAR THEN I ADDED ALGAE FIX AND WITHIN A HALF HOUR IT WAS CLEAR MARK MY WORDS AND IT DID NOT AFFECT ANYTHING JUST MAKE SURE U USE EXACT DOSE NO MORE AND NO LESS I DID NOT WANNA USE CHEMICALS BUT I COULD NOT DEAL WITH THE TEA GREEN WATER GOOD LUCK

Don't dose your tank with an algicide, they are often toxic to fish even when dosed according to the directions.

You need to do more water changes. If your nitrAtes were at a desirable level, you wouldn't have the extra nutrients for the algae to grow, and you would no longer have an algae problem.

If you can't afford the salt, then perhaps you need to re-evaluate the fish you choose to keep. Algae is an indicator of an underlying problem in the system, and until you fix that underlying problem (too many nutrients in the water) then you will continue to have this problem. Also, high nitrAte levels for extended periods of time can cause stress, disease and also death in the majority of all aquatic life (except for plants, they love it!)

Look into the American Flag Fish. They constantly eat algae and they are brackish and quite pretty and we sell some for pretty cheap at my store.
