do they thrive well in around 1.005-1.012 salinity?
You have an underlying problem that can not be solved by making increasing your bioload. In fact, that's the exact opposite effect it will have, and create more waste, more food for the algae. More water changes to get your nitrAte levels down will help solve your algae problem, as well as keeping your current fish happier and healthier. High nitrate levels for prolonged periods causes stress/disease in fish. Clean up that water and see how the algae problem handles itself.

And the only way to do that is...
(see my sig)

Oh, sorry. Yeah, don't add any more fish! I love your sig, pufferpunk, it's awesome.

The bio load should not be a problem there are only 2 dragon gobys and a catfish in a 55 gallon.
(and how many water changes a week are you all suggesting?)

Well, it seems that your nitrAtes have climbed from lack of frequent water changes. Really you need to test for nitrAtes, and you can act accordingly.

50% once per week is a good general rule for routine tank maintenance. Catfish are poop machines, and since your tank is so small, your water change schedule will have to change accordingly.

You may have to do daily 50% water changes to get nitrAtes down to a manageable level, and then begin the 50% 1xper week schedule.

I would only do 33%. 50% water changes are really stressful for fish in most cases.

Most discus breeders do 200% WC/day. I do 75-90% weekly WC on my tanks (90% being my discus). If done weekly, no amount of WC will stress your fish, because the tank's water will be almost exactly the same as your tap water.

This is not the case at all. Frequent water changes prevents the pH from deteriorating, causing a swing when you do a water change.

More clean water, the better. The best way to get clean water into your tank, is to do water changes. Doing water changes often (1-2 times per week) will decrease the stress caused by infrequent water changes, because the tank water is still very similar/identical to your new, clean water.

Oh yeah 55 is such a small tank..

Anyway I can't afford to change 50% a week and certainly not 100 or 200% so oh well.. my fish have been live for years like this so It can't be that lethal.

But I will try to take spitz006's avide 30% seems manageable.
