My point exactly...(refer to my earlier post)
So, please do tell me where you can get a brand new 300 gallon tank with brand new solid wood stand/canopy for $800. I want to be part of this "hardcore hobbyist" sector that gets all the cool deals.
Better yet, show me a place where you can get even a slightly used 300 gallon (that with elbow grease you can make "like new") with a brand new stand/canopy for $800 or "even cheaper". Remember, brand new will always mean brand new...and brand new will always be better than used, even if your elbow grease is super effective
.
If there are, you might find one (if it wasn't your craigslist post) in a long shot, but your last phrase,"when they can get a 300g for the
same price or sometimes even cheaper... " makes it seem like you find these deals all the time.
If YOU have had any experience cleaning glass tanks YOU will know that cleaning a 60 gallon tank with hard water built up all over with a razor is no small task...it will take at least a good hour to get it to "good" condition...so you can imagine what a 180 gallon would take...or let alone YOUR 300 gallons that you see all the time.
Not that you asked, but I use to do maintenance calls for a LFS (as a side job) which supplied Visio tanks and what you think are "jacked up" prices (in this case, can't speak for others) is actually borderline wholesale, if not less.
A brand new 180 gallon (sorry vendors...) sells for just about $300 with tops WHOLESALE.
That specific solid pine stand would go for "around" $400+ish wholesale (depending on who supplier is)...and yes, before you start...I know there are cheaper stands out there (more plain styles) and even open stands that you can get for $200ish or so.
Canopy will go for about $250ish Wholesale.
He bought for $975, so he either got a really good deal or a LFS ended up selling it for cost to clear up some floor space (which happens all the time).
So much for "jacked up" retail...
I know Strictly Fish (or somewhere around there) has occasional "at cost" sales to bring you into purchase other goods.
POOR GUY, signed onto MFK to make his first for sale thread and gets this treatment.

i didnt say anything about his thread i was just laughing at you because of what you said...
you obviously dont know the works and the way around this hobby as for prices but who
is gonna pay some jacked up retail price for a tank just because it's new & "has never seen
water"... most here do there research here before buying and some being the hardcore
hobbyist that they are wont pay $800 for a 180g just cause it's new when they can go out
there and get a much larger tank and put a little elbow grease in it and make it look new again...
it's only common sense. who's gonna buy a 180g for $800 when they can get a 300g for the
same price or sometimes even cheaper...
