Brand new to freshwater fish keeping! pics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think what we can take from this is that we should research before buying something from LFS and that you can't always trust what the guy/gal from the LFS says...

...I almost picked up a 8" jack dempsey, I wanted him pretty bad, but I knew he wouldn't jive with my African Cichlids very well.

Seems like these stores are giving you false info. Like others have said, it's not the OP's fault since she is new to fish though. If you're looking for a good scavenger then I can recommend a wide range of catfish. Platydoras armatulus would look nice the few times you see it :). Pimelodus blochii or ornatus would also be an interesting piece in the tank. Or maybe a jaguar catfish. There are hundreds of cats to choose from and I don't want to crowd this thread with a page if cats and their requirements so PM me if you need any help with catfish, I'm always happy to help!

Nice tank BTW!

rays do not like acid water or any ammonia they do not last long in those conditions thats why I learned my lesson, and do not try any more. I have a 420 gallon tank with a drip system and add marine salt every day and pond prime and my PH stays low because I have large fish and like others have more than I should, and still do a three quarter water change every week and the fish are very healthy and grow quickly. But rays just do not do well unless your water is perfect all the time.If you see the belly turning red or thinning of the fins on the perimeter or sunken in eyes I suggest you get rid of it before it dies

Am I the only one thinking that tank is a 150 or 180 gallons?

If those Oscars are around 11 inches it looks like it would take 2 to go the depth of the tank. It also looks to be 5-6 feet long.
