Brand Spanking New Cichla . . . But What Is It?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks Guys

You will be happy to hear they absolutely battered some good old hikari pellet this morning, i read into the swim bladder issue and it seems its likely from a poor diet, it did refer to malawi bloat and suggest high protein pellet could have something to do with it? This almost suggests not to feed him on the hikari for a while but i just dont feel prawns whitebait etc would give him the nutrition that he needs right now.

Any Thoughts?

Your collection of Cichla look fantastic and in the best of health Ash,good luck with the new additions.

Malawi bloat is a completely different problem. It happens when a fish that should be eating a vegetable diet is fed high protein foods. This causes digestive problems and ultimately the fish get's a fatal case of trapped wind.
I think your best course of action with these fish is loads of water changes and heavy aeration. If you have any spare pumps get them pumping over the surface. You can put them under water in the night so you can get some sleep though.
As for feeding give them plenty of hikari, prawns and white bait. These fish will be suffering from lack of nutrients so feed them all you can.
Good luck bud!!

Awesome pinima p/u! As you said....good wc routine....and id add a bit of salt. Great news on the pellets as well. A bit of massivore will fatten em right up.

Thanks for all the comments guys, i have been stuffing pellet down their throat (not that they need any help) and hopefully will see a real turn around in the coming weeks, i certainly will keep you guys update but for now. . . water change :D

beautiful pinima's.. too bad about the one guy's eye.. i rescued some cichla a few years ago with bad eyes from neglect. still have a couple of them.

i think with a good varied diet and good clean water they'll be as strong and as beautiful as the rest of your cichla.. :headbang2
