Anyone out there know anything about breeding tilapia.
Im curious about the process and ease. Also does anyone know a source for breading pairs in southern california.
I have a aquaponics project Im working on and need a continuous source of fish.Im also interested in perch.

Tilapias are relatively easy to breed and they do so in large quantities. They grow rapidly and are on the hardy side, so they are ideal for breeding. Tilapia breeding and farming has been a vital food source around the world for over 2,500 years.
Step 1. Acquire tilapia fish, the younger the better. It's better to get young tilapias because they can grow together and form breeding pairs on their own.
Step 2. Once the breeding pairs have been formed naturally, you can then remove the other fishes. This will give the breeding pair their own space to claim territory and then begin the breeding process.

Step 3 .Make sure the tilapias are well fed. The tilapias need to be in good condition to breed properly an d a good diet of pellets should do the trick.

Step 4. Watch and wait. You have done your job in setting the stage for the tilapias to breed. Tilapias are very productive breeders, so a single spawning can result in large fry quantities.

In philippines. We eat tilapias. They taste great. They are grown relatively easy if placed on ponds.

also you need to pick one of mouthbrooders IMO, not T. mariae and other substrate spawners

I assume higher fry production, and that Aren't most of the tilapia in aquaculture mouthbrooders like Oreochromis species

I'm looking for the most productive and easy to grow tilapias. They should ultimately be used for food but they will also contribute to the hydoponic aspect of the project. There also is an aesthetic component so 'schools' will be really important.
Two other questions, can I grow enough duck weed to feed them and where can I get quantities of small fish?Im in Los Angeles.
Thanks

if you do breed some,DO NOT RELEASE INTO LOCAL WATERS, we had a case in prt solfur louisiana and they took over and killed all the fish.
