new set up 360 gal ,saturday i found all my fish on top of the tank and breathing real hard ,so i paniced and took my water to lfs ,i cant find my test kit ,point to this he told me my nitrites were high to do a 30% water change and add water stabelizer i did that everything was good ,except im running one fx5 the other one i have stopped working i have to get another one this week in the mean time im runing a marineland 350 with the fx5 i have a airstone on on one side of the tank and a powerhead on the other do you guys think its just not enough filtration right now ? all comment s are very much welcome as well as advice ,oh by the way 55 gal sump is in the works !

if they are at the top gasping, this is usually a result of not enough disolved O2 in the water.

try adding aeration or better off using the filter returns to create surface movement.

smeone else have any ideas?

If its not overstocked and your not heavily feeding, that should be just fine. Is the one FX5 on there already cycled? How is the top of the water, is there alot of surface agitation? Whats your temp at?

I would really be questioning your water quality.

Did you get #'s for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and such?

Nitrite in the water can cause gasping. If you had a filter recently crap out.... your just cut the amount of bennificial bacteria in your tank in half and didn't decrease your bioload. Sounds like ammonia and nitrite spike time.

Find your test kit. Change more water.

well there is alot of current in my tank and air buubles i mean you could see it ,but than again it might be overstocked for just running one fx that makes sesnse ,and yeah my fx5 had used media im going to have to test my water again i got to get a test kit thanks guys anybody else

You can do NO harm by doing water changes. Remember that. If your tank has ammonia or nitrite in it, NOT doing water changes will cause harm. Since you can't test the water right now, I would be doing at least 1 or 2 daily 50% water changes until you can test the water.

I was having this problem on a new tank because I didnt not have enough surface agitation and I think some surfactant somehow made its way into the tank. I add some activated filter carbon to the tank and pointed one of my FX5's outputs out of the water so there was alot of agitation at the surface, and it fixed it. I dont test my water however, but because my rays disk started curling I brought a water sample into the LFS to get tested, and all of the parameters were low. So I knew it wasnt the beneficial bacteria in my case, and was either a surfactant, other chemical or poor oxygen levels.

did you do Anything to the tank the day before??
Are they still doing the same thing?
For them to act like that over night.. U must have done something..
wat kind of fish?
