breathing heavily after water change?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Another thing, why is it just this tank? If I change 5 tanks with the same exact water, same time, same prime, etc. Then why is this tank having issues? Is it just coincidence that the same species of geo died and not the other geo or other fish?

Very good point. I do know certain species of fish are less tolerant of chloramine concentrations than others though, which could explain why you are losing only certain species. A quick thought would be to age the water for a week or two before using it in this particular tank.

Ask the water authority if they are adding anything to the water supply and tell them why. They can also issue information (or tell you where the information is posted) regarding the drinking water quality and routine tests that are performed.

I did not mention I just added plants and a odyssea plant light to this tank. And I did add flourish excel like I do on my other 2 planted tanks. Could that cause any harm to the fish?

Liquid CO2 Booster? If over dosed that can be harmful and kill your fish, like I said in earlier replied that each fish specie has different react and adjustment to water parameter.

I don't believe the light nor the plants would pose a threat. I can't expertly speak about the Flourish Excel, but I can't see how it would have impacted fish health unless the particular species of Geophagus is not tolerant of something in the product. I find that hard to fathom and am still leaning towards chloramine.

So Geophagus is the only specie you have lost so far?

I don't think I over dosed it, dosed as directed, just like my 10 gallon planted tank and 125 gallon planted. This is just the first time I dosed this tank. This just is really frustrating. I hate losing fish and especially when I don't know why. These geos were getting big and their colors starting to really show

Try aging the water and refrain from adding anything but Prime and Stability until you can isolate the culprit.

Another quick thought... are you running any active resins like Zeolite or Ammochips?

Yes geos only. And there is still a different species of geo in that tank alive. My dat appears to be back to normal, it came swimming up to me when I passed by where as before it wouldn't. (Dat is in a different tank fyi)
