I haven't posted in a while because I have been working on a few breeding projects. I have had this bonded pair of Atabapo I for about two years now. The male is 10"s and female is 9"s. She is holding eggs but has not latex them. They have been in tap water with frequent water changes. Their only tank mates are 30 danios which create IMO a good atmosphere for the pair. There colors are blazing red and I will take pictures of them tomorrow. Has anyone had success breeding these pikes and if so please let me know how you did it. I'm really siked about this pair😉

Nice they're a black water pike from the rio atabapo so unless your tap water is really really soft I'd def do RO water. Had a buddy spawn them dedicated 700 gallons to them. Made water really soft and used RO. He spawned them but for some reason has no fry. I have a theory that in order for the eggs to develop in some lugubris pikes the water needs to be really soft and acidic. They're a tough pike to spawn (all lugubris are tough but these are black water) but can be vented at around 6 inches. His male eventually killed his mate though. Good luck and make sure you post plenty of pics

Thanks for the info, I will make water tonight and do a 25% water change. I will also take pictures. She is swollen with eggs so I know she just needs the right water. Quick question. If I do 25% a week on this tank would I have to use some type of buffers

Very cool, wishing you good luck on the spawn. As Crenicichla444 said they're black water fish so softening the water should help make the water closer to natural for them and hopefully induce spawning. As far as softening the water there's of course store bought conditioners or you can add peat to the tank itself or to your filter to help soften the water for you. COA was selling 3-4 inch juvies recently that he said was from a captive spawning. So you can try hitting him up and seeing if he can put you in touch with who ever bred them and get some info from them.

Good luck. Haven't seen you around in a while. I agree with what others have said. You might want to condition with earthworms and crayfish which is what I did to get my cincta to spawn. I have plenty of wood in my setup which helped soften water as they waited several days after a wc to spawn. I am in the philly burbs so I'm sure we have similar water. What size is your tank again?

There is some info on spawning marmorata in this article. It might help.

Just like in this article, my cincta laid their eggs on the bottom of a log. The article also states a 6 foot tank as a minimum to have the best luck in spawning them.

I am also in the burbs outside of philly. Abington/glenside area. The pair is in a 180 gal. With about 20 giant danios swimming non stop. I have about 5-6 pieces of driftwood and some pvc. I just purchased a RO water machine and I use a 55 gal trash can to hold the water in with a heater. I will do my first soft water change tonight. But only like 15-20%. Thanks for the info on marms because I have a breeding pair of them also and the female has a belly full of eggs too. So maybe I can spawn both in the near future. That's why keeping lugubris pikes are my favorite because it's a real challenge and it test your fish keeping skills. I wish Cincta were available right now. I would love to work with them also

I believe Wayne used straight PA water to spawn his marms. He was in the Lehigh Valley I believe. Good luck with the Marms. I'd be interested in Fry when u get some. I'm in Glen Mills. Good to see you around.

Crayfish are now illegal to sell in PA but a few stores still have them. I used them to condition my cincta. As for cincta, a forum member here was able to pick up juvies at the Capital Cichlid Association meeting a few weeks back. Scan the ID threads in here. He has the name of the vendor. I got mine from Shark Aquarium a few months back.
