Breeding... and hybrids. hystrix x motoro

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
keepin, lets do what we talked about and let me ship you this male. :-) hes well over 8 inch disc and needs some ladies!!! i know they arent comparable but that is exactly what i do with my piranhas, i have been breeding them for 4 years now and to trigger a spawn i do a large water change and drop the temp considerably for about 3-5 days, i then spike the temp into the 80's. i pretty much can have a spawn whenever i want.... i also leave a "moonlight" on for them. i don't know when rays breed but who knows??? being that we don't see many CB hystrix, they could be a little trickier then some of the other species that we all keep. i know my motoros dont give a damn what time of day or water temp, when he wants it he gets it.

I considered it..... but i finally found one that is ready to breed.. should be here soon ;)

find me a female!!!!! i talked to John G and he said i can have one or both of the females he has, he wont ship until february! If he still has both i will buy both of them and make a trio. i want to see pics of the new addition!

i never see much movement but my eyes are crap

both my female leo and p14 never had the mad movement that most see from leo or motoro

But did you see a noticeable hump? My hystrix are pretty fat, and as you know tall rays. I think i see a hump, but does not seem to get much bigger.

Keepin, I believe you and I got our rays from the same batch. I am in no way an expert on this. I did the hydrologic cycle because I remembered them talking about it at the ray symposium in Chicago so I thought I would do mini cycles. Reading through this thread the issue is the females. Are they pregnant? Can they get pregnant or do they have something wrong. I have no clue and wouldn't even know how to make sure. I've read that some people on this forum didn't even know the rays were prego than 1 day there were pups in the tank. As far as maybe a motoro can't breed with a hystrix that just sounds asinine. Some one on here had a retic breed with hystrix and Big Dave had a motoro-hystrix combo, other people have done flower-leos and the list goes on. My final thought is a video camera and section the tank off so the male and 1 female can be together by themselves that way you can focus on 1 thing with 1 female and not have all of the distractions. My female absolutely ballooned but she also had 5 pups. I know Brent had his hystrix breed and had 2 pups. I would be curious to know how much movement he saw with his before birth.

Digger, what changes were made to simulate the hydrologic cylce? And did yours breed again shortly after giving birth?

I have more on the way in mid Feb. The male really doesn't seem to need the cycle anymore. Both females are prego. All I did was drop the temp about 5 degrees and when I did this I did 2 water changes daily for 7-10 days. Then I would raise the temp back up and not do a water change for 1 week. I repeated this for 2-3 months and it finally happened. While I did it I first noticed the sperm plugs then the male just kept getting more aggressive not really going for the females but he would fight for food and swim all over non stop. The only issue I really had was watching the nitrates go up with no water change gets very scary at times. My results speak for themselves and now that both are pregnant 1 for a second time with the male still going after both from time to time I would find it hard for anyone to refute.

How big are your females?
