I have had these Hystrix for a few years now and no luck on breeding. The male has beaten up he female a few times to the point of seperation but even that does not happen very often. I recently changed out my filtration to K1 which keeps the water crystal clear and seemed to have spurred the behaviour again. My issue is that the male beats on the female and I usually get tired of watching him accomplish nothing and pull him out. Real simple question for you? How long do you leave your males with your females and what is your "breaking point" before you pull them out

Gotta leave the male in there and let him figure it out...
Only time I seperate is if I know a female is already tagged and one of the males keeps going after her.

I would leave the male in with her but only remove him if she stops eating or is very stressed or else assume they are just doing there thing. Not talking from experience but what I would probably do in your situation.

My breaking point is if the female stops eating... pull him out!

This^ They can take a beating and regenerate fast but they can't do that without proper nutrition. If they're too stressed to eat they probably won't be receptive to breeding attempts.

I separated my pair once I noticed some big chunks out of her disk. I seemed to get lucky he was nipping at her for about a week before I said enough was enough and separated them little did I know he already tagged her. I didn't see sperm plugs cloudy water or anything just noticed her getting big.

I can't tell you how many rays I've lost by not pulling the males. I used to think they'd figure it out and that they won't hurt the female that bad...... BS.

I'm with the others, missed meal and the male goes back to the meat locker.
