its difficult with unproven males. your doing the right thing by looking after the female. the male will get there eventually. ... at first they do alot of damage but as they get more experienced they do less and sometimes hardly noticable.
you can keep the together and risk the female or keep seperating them when things get bad and try again. nobody knows how long it will take the pair to get it right so caution is up to you.
good luck with them. keep at it.

And...he's out. I think I need a new male this guy is a dud.

Thanks for the answers.
He's not a dud just needs time to figure it out. Be patient with him and he will give you some pups.
I had a trio of marbles from C CODISCUS That I was growing out and unfortunately lost the male. So the 2 females went in with the other marble male I had and as soon as she was ready he tagged her. I went threw months of separation and re introducing them from behind the divider. Patients is key just be smarter then the ray don't let the ray be smarter then you

My Pearl was a "dud". I kept him in a smaller tank on the same system. He isn't nice to the females so he's introduced for a day or 2 then back to the "meat locker" a 180 where he has only 1 fish with him. I'd leave him in there for months, short visits to the big ttank made him try harder. It was apparent cause it would cause all the males in the big tank to get in a frenzy but the rays that lived with the females wouldn't touch them. The Pearl was the one that ended up getting my Henleo, not the other blackie males that reside with her.

I think there's something to keeping them in the same water but not allowing them to be together.

Maybe he just needs a spark? Some competition perhaps???

Yes I think I am going to get him a couple of big female Motoros and stick him in a pond for a while. He has had competition in there, (mature Leo's who have bred before).l he has two very mature females and just beats the one. I say dud in a bit of a joking manner as he could be one of the few male hystrix in Canada. The other 2 I know are from a guy who has no females and won't sell me a male! Oh well.

Don't give up on him, I've got a p14 pair I've been doing the shuffle with for almost 3 years. dozens of attempts. Still hoping next time he figures it out. Maybe he will, maybe he won't.

I take for grantid how hard it is to find Hystrix up there..... By competition I wwas just suggesting getting another male hystrix since it seems like most of the time they prefer their own species....
Possible to talk said guy into test driving a trade of males? lol

I'm in a similar boat.... Very fertile ladies and a male mutt that won't impregnate them but beats up any other male that tries.
