Ok, so my Fiance gets a few betta's. NOW she wants to breed. lol. Ive kept aquariums practially my whole life, and know about betta's but have never actually bred them. I know the set up requirements, temp requirements etc. My question is where can i find info on what ill get if we breed one of our Half Moon Males with a Veil Tail female? OR our Double Tail Male with a Veil Tail fem? Anywhere i can find what these crosses will give me?? ANyone else on here breed bettas can give us some tips/tricks? Thanks alot.

You will get a mix of tail configurations. I suggest finding some breeding quality bettas online. Also, order some vinegar eels for food for the fry.

I know double tail is recessive so in that cross you wont see it in the young, but theyll be carrying the gene.
The other Tien is probably right youll get a mix of shapes, probably none as interesting as the parents.I feed my fry mostly newly hatched brine shrimp and microworms.

The number of web pages that describe the process of breeding bettas is staggering. I suggest reading twenty or thirty of them to get a broad view of your options. I could easily tell you my way, but it's just a variation of the basics.

The only thing I do differently from most descriptions is to remove the male as soon as the fry show the ability to swim. This prevents the all-too-common scenario of eaten fry and also encourages the strongest of fry to survive best. Many other breeders suggest leaving the male in longer, until the fry are all horizontal and swimming freely. That can work out fine, but I don't trust a hungry daddy that much.

thanks alot for the responses. So double tail is a resessive gene.. so if i breed my veil tail with the double tail the babies will be normal veil tail unless the mother also carries the double tail gene, then both parents will carry double tail and it will show up in the fry. if the female dont carry the DT gene then the babies will most likely be veil tail?? How do i figure out which gene are DOM or RESessive? Halfmoon dom or resessive? etc.? thanks.

also what is the time period you should allow before breeding the female.. If she spawns, how soon can we use her to breed again?

Use The Punnet Square :D

ok another question. after fry hatch etc. How long can the fry stay together before they have to be seperated from each other....

You have a bunch of good questions, but as others have suggested, do some reading on line. I have read 2 or 3 books on betta breeding and viewed many websites. Betty Splendens has a great site. There are plenty more out there.
