Hey guys I've been planning on this for a while now and I'm going the store tomorrow to pick some fish up. When buying these guys what should I look for to tell they are healthy? And how long should they be if I want them to start breeding generally soon. Thanks guys

I would think 4 inches is a good size, preferably fish that fins aren't torn and are acting as most plecos do...which is about nothing at all. Good luck with your breeding, they're a really cool species of pleco!

You dont want skinny girls. 3" + is your best bet. You can even better your chances by picking a female that is extra plump. This will usually mean shes gravid and if her belly is dark also. Remember you want a cave that only has one entrance. And that will snuggly fit the male and female and not much more space, the deeper and longer the better. Do some heavy protein feedings, bloodworms, shrimp pellets, ect. Turn your temp up a bit to about 80-82 then do some partial frequent than usual water changes with cold tap water. This formula should give you eggs within 1-3 weeks. The male will push the female to his cave she will exit and he stays and raises babies for weeks.

they don't eat those. I know a breeder and he say don't feed them bloodworms

I love my Bristlenose pleco...that little guy is everywhere all the time...he is about an inch and a half and cleans every inch of my 40 gallon...

I have a pair of albinos that have spawned 3 times and they're still only 2.5" or so. Ended up giving them their own tank along with all their fry. I trade them for food at the LFS. They just spawned within the last month and the male is guarding yet another batch of eggs. They really like the tall shot glass I gave them to spawn in (under a piece of clay pot). Keep the spawning cave pointed into a good current to help aerate the eggs. I'm now keeping the female in another tank until I'm ready for more fry because I currently have 60+ fry/eggs to raise and trade off.
I feed omega1 wafers and NLS.
