Breeding Bristlenoses

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You can also try the Long Fin Calico AKA Marbled Bristlenose that are more rare than the albino bristlenose if you can find some.

Thanks :)

I have a peice of lava rock thats hollowed out to make a cave system, 1 big peice of bogwood that makes a cave against the side glass and a slate cave that is huge! I was have some marsh roots. i will also add some cheap plants to provide cover and if they eat them then it doesnt matter. hopefully that will do.

I have seen some really small albino ones in my LFS (like an inch) but i was hoping to find some fully grown ones as i dont want to have to grow them up. i have seen some albino long fins about aswell!

Thanks
Matt

Sounds good, Matt. Real plants are always a bonus, as the new babies will be able to graze algae off them, even if the adults ignore them (and they most probably will...mine don't eat any of the plants in my planted tanks).

You may get a suprise even with the browns. My browns carry albino and throw about 50% albinos.

Here's a batch (well, several batches, really...you can see the variation in sizes there) from one of my planted tanks. They REALLY love canned green beans.

And some little ones munching on a zuccini:

What are your water parameters to get these to breed? I have a pair of albino longfins that are a lil over a year old in a 20g and they just aren't breeding yet.

thanks for the pictures!! i cant wait till i get some lil wrigglers!! I assume that an AlbinoXBrown cross would be a 50/50 split? I think i will do live plants, java fern, java moss and anubias.

Thanks
Matt

if you have a pair and the female is showing.. then drop the temp for 3-4 days by 4-5 degrees and bump it back up after that.. usually my tanks are set around 82 and when they stop producing i drop it down to 77-78 for a little and back up to 82.. i usually get eggs a week after or less..

BNs are super duper easy to breed.. i first bought 4 to clean my various tanks.. then i thought to myself.. hrm, i think ill try breeding them.. now i have probably close to 100 bns.. from only 1 pair.

almost a month ago i had a true albino pair spawn and i got about 30 albino babies.. but they got eaten when my baby arowana jumped into the breeder.. now i have a fry tank :D

PICS of my latest one..

Ph is 7.0, although my water is soft. Temp is 77-78. I don't mess with raising and lowering temps or anything.

I also don't remove the eggs from dad. They won't harm their young or eat eggs.

Wow thats awesome. I was having second guesses on the female. She or unless it is a really late male. has a single row of bristles on the outer rim of the face? Male or female? Thanks again.

There are few things cuter than baby plecos, IMO. They are perfect little replicas of the adults.

Whether or not you'd get a 50/50 split would depend on whether or not the dad carries albino...you might get more than a 50/50 split. 50/50 is probably a decent guesstimate, though. Plants all sound good...all really easy to keep.

Tough...have you got a photo? Some of my females are completely bristle-free. Others, have a nice mustache of smaller bristles. IMO, the presence of bristles isn't a good indicator, body shape and head shape are better. The females will always be a little smaller, but again that's tough if you have a late male.
