breeding cichlids through a divider.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Another method is putting two males in the tank one on each side of the divider and a hole for the female to get back and forth.

Thanks for the reply. I dont understand what the point of this would be i mean i guess two places to breed but the female would be beat the hell by the time two males got done with her. And again i mean a divider were the female cannot get through to the other side.

People have been using this technique for decades for breeding large and aggressive cichlids.

Thanks for the reply i have read a lot of use full info from you on this site. If you have any insight on this idea i would greatly appreciate thanks for your time.

"Fortunately there is an approach to breeding substratum-spawning cichlids that eliminates all risk of injury to the pair while assuring their keeper of an acceptable number of fry. The incomplete divider technique, developed by Guy D. Jordan and his coterie of pioneering guapote fanciers in the mid 1960's, exploits an essential feature of external fertilization, the tendency for spermatozoa to diffuse throughout an aqueous medium. 1n its simplest version, this technique entails dividing the breeding tank with a glass partition whose lower surface is prevented from coming into contact with the floor of the aquarium, leaving a crack through which the breeders cannot pass. A suitable spawning site is placed immediately adjacent to the barrier on that side into which the female will be introduced, then the prospective parents are placed in their new quarters.

The pair will interact through the divider, their activities climaxing in the female spawning on the site provided for that purpose. The male will in the meantime exercise his function on the other side of the barrier. Sufficient milt will pass under the barrier to assure fertilization of a significant fraction of the newly deposited eggs. The actual percentage will depend upon how efficiently and rapidly the tank's filter circulates its contents, upon the distance of the spawning site from the barrier and upon its permeability. In its most rudimentary form, the incomplete divider method will result in fertilization of 50% to 75% of a clutch of eggs. For very prolific cichlids, such as most of the larger , this usually represents a more than adequate return on the aquarist's efforts. Higher percentages of fertilized eggs will result if the fish are separated by a barrier that is more fully permeable to the passage of spermatozoa. Plastic screening fastened to a rigid frame or egg crate diffuser sheeting cut to fit the interior dimensions of the breeding tank will serve this purpose nicely and are easily procured in the bargain."

aclockworkorange thanks for taking the time to find the article copy pasting some of it. and putting the link on here for me to view i do appreciate it greatly. I will how ever sadly admit the person who wrote it is way smarter then i can understand. I do grasp the concept of what it says and means. But alot of big words for me I am no english major. Let me add that at this point in time i am not trying to breed my fish. I just want to see for now if they are both firtile or not. Female laid eggs the day i recieved and unboxed her so i know she is fertile. I am posting one pic just to show the divider i have in the tank now it is a 3/16th thick piece of acrylic i got from portland glass and drilled a ton of holes in it. I had the divider lifted enough for the female to get to the other side. But they diddnt play nice nothing to bad some torn fins ect but is enough for me. But i could use this divider and lift it up just a little less so neither can get through. I actually have a peice of slate that is as big as the bottom of the tank minus a couple inches or less on all sides. i had it in the tank to begin with. I will throw in the peice of slate tommorrow. and raise the divider as high as i can with out the female being able to get through and c what happens. Thanks for the info. any other ideas any one. This tank has plenty of current in it. It has a eheim g160 can and ac110 and its a 65 standard. If they are both firtile my idea is to try this in a 5x2x2 just for them. Not to get to off track thow this thread is only to be for how to breed large breed cichlids through a divider not the tank size, or fish specificaully. and again thanks for the replys guys
