From what I understand, 'One doesn't'. The only way I've heard is acquiring a group & observing if 2 or more pair off after a period of time & hope that the pair is actually M/F. "T"If I was breeding clown knifes I'd get a massive tank and about 4 knifes. That way, there is definitely a pair in there somewhere, maybe even two.
