Im looking to start breeding convicts - since they breed the most often and easiest. How many fish should I start with for this project? and how big are the cons before the usually start breeding?

2 pairs should be enough for anyone! I always got babies! :D They can start breeding from 1inch plus. I'm at the point where soon as I can sex a convict, they get seperated.

just buy a bunch 5 or 6 then watch as they pair off. Once you have your pair or pairs feed the rest to something. I've seen cons start breeding as small as 3/4 of an inch.

Most will say no to the 10g idea. But i have done it. I put mine in a cycled 10 that was bare bottom and no decor what so ever and 7 days later I have fry. Just set up your 10 and do the fishless cycle and then add a pair with just about any decor you would like and wait. It will happen.

i bred them in a 10 gallon just 3 weeks ago. just get a male and a female and put them in. my bred in 1 week. the female has red /orange on its belly and the males dont

Question: Can you throw in a random male and female? Also, about how many fry would you get in 1 spawn, and how often, and how much longer do they respawn after that? Im trying to decide if I should do cons or if I should breed marbled cray fish.

I got a 10 gal planned to breed something to feed to my fish.

If you get a random male and female i was told they would pair up after fighting for a while. I have read that you will get 100+ fry from a single egg laying and it will take place every 30-45 days. I did not even give mine a place to lay or any substrate and i wouold guess i have maybe 75 fry in my 10. But i do not think one 10 will do it. Cause if there are any fry in the tank when the next batch hatches the parents will get aggressive with them.

The fry can stay with the parents until they spawn again. Once there is another spawn about to happen it is a good idea to remove them cause the parents will become aggressive against the now 1''+ old fry when the hatchlings are in the tank.-----------that is what makes these so much better than live bearers IMO. ----------If you wanted to leave the fry in the tank until you used them all for what ever reason(feeders) you just need to remove the female or the male parent.
