Breeding Con's

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Then you don't have to worry about a new tank for fry, or trying to feed them really. Just feed the Convicts the flakes and the fry will clean up what's left.:)

Ok i have Cons the Have paired off and breed. I saw alot of little Fry swimming around. I even put a nylon bag over the filter intake so the AC70 won't suck them up.

Everything was fine.

Fed Everyday with a Variety of stuff
Flakes
Hiraki Cichlid Gold
and some other pellets i have.

2 days later i have no Fry in the Tank.

What a Bummer.

Can anybody with experience post a small guide and can we possibly have it stickied.

I am Breeding for Live Food. and keep loosing the Fry.

One time i even removed the parent to another tank and crushed up food and put it in the tank.

Fry were doing good but Then they all died.

Can someone Put their experience.

when can you remove the parents after the fry hatch.
what can you feed the fry if they are alone.
what Water Temp should they be kept at.
Should scheduled w/c be kept up or put off.

Any info will be great full.

I'd be interested in the above questins too. I just had my first batch of eggs hatch a day ago and I'm not completely sure how to best proceed for the fry.

You can remove parents at anytime. But they are usually good parents and I always leave mine together for awhile.
Feed them anything big fish eat, but crushed and small enough for little fellas.
The parents will also chew food and spit it out for the babies. And stir up substrate to reveal micro organisms.
You can also use liquid foods commercially available. Or raw egg, maybe milk powder.
Room temp fine.
I limit w/c at first. But you must not over feed. They have small bellies. Excess food will turn the tank into a sewer and kill the fry. But they are tough fish and can handle just about anything.
You can also use snails and shrimp to help clean up extra food.
Several small feedings much better than a big one. Then they always have food available, but not so much it is not eaten.

I have been leaving the fry in the tank until the next batch is layed with the parents. I have heard the parents might eat the first couple of spawns just cause they do not know any better. I have also heard that feeding the parents live foods and even pellets cause them to eat the fry sometimes cause the fry look like a pellet and or food to them. I feed mine flakes mostly and blood worms when i am trying to speed up the spawning. Also i leave my light on for most of the day and try to grow algae cause the fry like to eat algae-----------------in your situation i would be worried about tank parameters. You said that the fry even died when you removed the parents. This is usually due to poor maintenance and or ammonia spikes. How long has the tank been running and what are the test readings for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate?

Yeah sounds like bad water, maybe from over feeding. Especially if fry are given full sized pellets.

how can you sex the convicts

Generally the females have some red scales on the flanks as they reach sexual maturity (which doesn't take long at all!!! I've had them pair off and spawn in the fry grow-out tank!)

You should crush some of the flakes for the fry. Full flakes are just to big for them to start with. The parents may instinctively try their best. But our little tanks do not have as much life in them as a south American river.
Convicts don't need much. But they do need something.
In a fry only tank, they will nibble at full size flakes and may or may not get enough to eat. But they won't eat it all and this will cause water problems.
Then you have stressed fish, slow growth, higher mortality. Eventually it's too much for even the hardy cons to take and you will find them all belly up.
Even if the water is good, they won't grow if they can't eat big food with little mouths.
