what size tank should i have for breeding convicts for feeders?
any other info would be nice and appreciated.

A 29g or 20g long is best for breeding. It's handy to also have another 20g or 10g as a grow out or to remove one of the parents if they start getting beaten on. If you do use just one tank buy some egg crate to use as a divider.

:iagree:
or be prepared to buy more females

I Agree, a 29 or a 20L.

I Have a 20L that I have used for that very purpose. As soon as I get my Sev's and Sajica to the newly cycled home, I will go back to the 20L for Cons and fry.........

Disease Free, Safe Feeders!

:D

thanx all.
can i keep the parents in there and just take out the fry or do the adults need their own tank?

convicts are great parents but take the babies out before the next batch of eggs hatch

a 20 long.

one question. why don't you use platies or mollies? they need less room, and produce offspring twice as large as convict fry. also, in a 20 gallon tank, you could have quite the breeding colony.

my problems with feeding cons are that some may survive and go on to conquer your tank, and fish may choke because when the cons are swallowed, they stick up the spines on their back and get caught in the diner's throat (ouch)

just my 2 cents:)

uhhhh....... aren't platy/moly/etc fry tiny as hell?
so you wouldn't do convicts? cause personally i kinda like them and wouldn't mind having a pair in a tank. i would just be using the fry to feed my oscar and save some $$$.

They couldn't conquer any of my tanks lol (except my community tank). I guess it depends on what you're feeding them to though. Don't let them grow large enough to pose a choking hazard and no worries.
