I'm fairly new to Black Convicts, so I'm not familiar with their behavior. Is it normal for the male to chase the female around the tank?
yes chasing is normal.if your convict has any red in the middle,it's probably a female

Not sure. They did dig a nice little hole under a rock where the female spends more time than not, but I can't tell if there are any eggs.

if the female disappears under that rock and stays there for a long time. its more then likely that there are eggs or about to be eggs it is just a count down till there are fry

females have rounded dorsal and anal fins.. males have long pointy ones, and i dont think aggression is a sign cuz they all are pretty fussy with each other even females toward males when mating :/

I came home from work today to find the male convict belly up! No idea what happened. Just yesterday, he was charging off any fish who came too close to the fry for his liking, and was eating/bahaving like normal. The pair were never bothered by the other fish in the tank from what I saw, and he looked intact, besides a bloated belly, when I took him out. Hopefully I get a male to survive out of the fry, or I will probably end up buying another one. They are in a 72x18x20 tank.
