I bought a pair of pink convicts about two weeks ago. Since then the male has been very busy digging pits all over the tank but the female doesn't seem to be interested. Is this a normal part of the breeding ritual? Will she eventually come around?

If you get a male and a female con they will 90% of the time breed. You should be fine. Watch their tankmates they will be pinned into a corner when the time comes

Try a cave in the form of a small flower pot and or a piece of clean PVC pipe.

What size are they? Iirc when the female is ready to spawn her belly will be a nice pink color. Keep at it and be patient. Ex: me with bushynose plecos... Have had them since last September and have yet to see any sign of breeding. Finely figured out I need to stop messing with them and let them do their thing.

They are about 3 inches, the female a little smaller. The female's belly is bright orange since the day i got them. I didn't realize they needed a cave. I just thought they needed a flat surface so i provided a couple flat rocks some vertical and some horizontal. I will try the pvc idea.

fatten her up.........Feed lots of tubifix worms and live brine shrimp..............Usually the live feed will help get them in shape................

"Spawning in the bag on the way home"...."spawning in a beer can full of swamp water"..."spawning in the pet store display tanks". I CANNOT get a pair of cons to breed...the male always kills the female, or bites at her until she succumbs to disease.

I had a pair that I got off someone on the forum. They had just spawned right before they were shipped and they had the fry with them. I get them home in my 55 and then they start to get settled. The male was about 3" and female about 2". They spawned about a month after. Had a big batch of fry. Then they had another set of fry about a month after. I raised the fry and most are about 1-2" I was expecting another batch and I check the tank to find the female gone. I didnt mess with the cons I just let nature take its course and they made babies for me.
