Breeding convicts

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
"Spawning in the bag on the way home"...."spawning in a beer can full of swamp water"..."spawning in the pet store display tanks". I CANNOT get a pair of cons to breed...the male always kills the female, or bites at her until she succumbs to disease.

Again... Same problem I have with bushynose plecos.

I read somewhere that if you leave the fry with the parents after they reach a certain age/size the parents will stop protecting them and may eat them. I also read that if you separate them too soon the parents will start fighting each other. So how old should they be when you separate them?

I have personally never seen the parents fight eachother. But the fry should be about half an inch or about 2 months or so old before you seperate them from the parents as convicts are amazing parents. So you should be fine.

I like to siphon the fry right after hatching.I place the fry in a growout tank, normally between 20-60g tank......I have no substrate in the tank because uneaten food always gets stuck in the grooves of substrate.....I keep the water level half way filled for the first 4 weeks.......As the second month comes along, when they are healthy sized swiimmers, I fill the tank to the top and placed a HOB filter.........O yeah, I do 50% water changes everyday for the first 2 weeks...........Babay brine shrimp is the key to healthy fast growth..........
