Breeding Eartheaters - what are my best choices/options

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am looking at those as well.
There are a ton of variations on the eartheaters as a whole. I am still familiarizing myself. I agree after looking at the surie profile that max size of 12" is not doable. For these, I am looking at 6-7" max size.

Interesting that it may not be a real surie. I will have to look around the board some more. I am still deciding, but leaning towards these eartheaters.

I saw two red severums today at the same store and they were gorgeous, for $40 each! Not sure if that's on par, but they were beautiful. I have read that two severums would be fine in a 55, so I have been looking at them too.
*EDIT - I think that one severum with a few small tankmates would be the best choice, based on their size, in the 55 gal. The reds at the LFS were knockout red, I couldn't believe it.

Thanks for the help! I will look more into those smaller ones you suggested.

cough cough ... what about Geophagus steindachneri ? they are small enough for your tank and breed relatively easy .

You really think steiny's would fair well in a 55 gallon? (not sarcastic, actual question) I was always under the impression the conspecific aggression is up there with these guys and the smaller the tank the worse it gets. I have never owned any species of the humped verieties so Im not speaking from experience, just research.

i know a guy that has a breeding pair in a smaller tank ... i think its a 40 ... i have not kept these personally so , yeah , i'm not sure , but i would definately look into it if i wanted to breed some small geos .

40 bucks is way to much for the sev. They have came down alot here my lfs has them for $9 about the size of a silver dollar coin

Red ones? Sorry, but I doubt it. In Chicagoland they are very hard to come by.

I wouldn't keep severums in a 55 gallon as a rule of thumb. If you end up with small adults it could be possible (I've done it), but my super red severum is over 8" and very thick. A 55 would be cramped quarters for him. He's very comfortable in my 210 gallon.

As for small Geos, I've had my G. parnaibe for over a year and they maxed out at about 4". I'm not sure if this is common or not, but that's all I got out of them. They came to me very small and reached this size within about 8 months, and then just stopped growing. They have spawned for me on several occasions but I haven't managed to save any fry yet. I actually am considering moving my trio to a 55 in order to try and spawn them. So I think a small group of those would work. Most websites I've read about them say they only reach 4 - 6" so I guess mine are just on the small side.

At this point I'm really considering upgrading all my 55s to 75s just to give my fish the extra width. That's the only downside of the 55 gallon footprint for me.

Ryan - G. parnaibe is supposed to only max at 4" in the wild, but often will reach 6" in the aquarium. Like many species, it grows larger in our tanks with the constant food (oscars come to mind as well).

I raised a breeding pair of Geo Altifrons in my 240g but due to aggression they inflict on their tankmates during breeding I temporarily put them in a 55g. The male is approx 9" and the female is about 7". They're doing fine they even breed in the 55g but the problem is when the female is not in heat the male chases her around big time. I added alot of driftwood so the female has new escape routes. Hope this helps

I took out my giant driftwood and the only thing with some height right now will be plants. Hmm, I am still deciding, but thanks for the breeding insight, it really helps me.
