I think I'm going to start breeding feeders for my small gar. What would everyone recommend? Convicts, Guppies, Mollies? Any other? Thanks.

I breed convicts for feeders.

what m/f ratio is the best?

you getting enough production? they're eating 3 doz every other day. i know it will take a while to get going but more females would up the numbers.

for a small gar id breed guppies first. one male and several females. when it gets bigger id breed convicts

when it gets bigger it's going on smelt and shrimp, just don't want to starve them into it yet.

convicts forum pairs so get m/f, m/f, not mfff. If you want to feed exclusively you'll need several breeding pairs and several growout tanks. Figure 3-5 months after hacking before they reach feeder size - depending on how big the fish you're feeding. Bigger growout tanks are better since the large water volume stays clean longer and the fry grow much faster. Either that or do lots of water changes. Mine are in 20g breeders and I try to keep them with the parents for 4-8 weeks. They grow much faster. If you are going for bulk you'll need to remove them sooner to get the parents to breed again. After they leave their parents they go into a 20 with other fry. Once they get to 1/2" they go to a 55 with the larger fry until they get moved to their forever home.....

Can U keep 3-4 breeding pairs in a 55gl long (48") if properly spaced? Going to start my own breeding but need to feed big bichirs and a blk aro. Just wondering if this could be achieved. Thanks:headbang2
