Got my hands on a free 29 gallon. Wanna breed feeders for my cichlids.
Any suggestions? Cons rosy reds or what. Never done this a simple walk through would be appreciated. Thanks.

A pair of cons would be simple. Add some rocks or decor clay pots etc. temp around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Decent filtration and a pair of mature cons. To start. I'm sure someone else will give you better info.

Its kinda tough to get ahold of confirmed male and female adult cons w/o growing them out so i would go with Mollys, Platys, Guppys or any Livebearer if your a beginner.

They will give birth to live young, that must be seperated or the parents will eat them up. A birth box is made for this thats sold at most LFS. Depending on the size of your current stock should effect what you choose, smaller fish will be fine w/ fancy guppys and you can grow out A LOT of them in a 30. If you have larger fish i would go w/ platy or mollies. Jeff rapps has some nicauraguan mollies that obtain lengths of 5 inches if your interested in breeding those.

I cant wait to get my own breeder thing going again, had a palmas polli bichir in there to make sure he wasnt sick or anything (i basically use my breeder as a QT, as my breeding fish usually are cheap and small i dont mind them being picked off) had it divided but the lil sucker somehow got to the other side and picked off most of my breeding stock, so now i have a butterfly fish in there because i thought my TATF would tear him up

Well I know if I decide to go with cons that I only need to start with two. I've bred them before. I was wondering though if I wanted to use live bearers like platys guppies or mollies how many do I need to start with?

Dozen or so. I couldn't get my guppies to stop breeding if I tried. In all my tanks actually.

to fill a 30 gallon, i would go with f1 and do 12 guppys, 2 males and the rest female. If you go with Mollys go with 7 or 8 and one male. Too many males will stress out the females too much. Yes, the initial cost of the fish may be more but i believe the advantage is with livebearers, more fry, more frequently.
