Male guppies are usually more colorful then female also and smaller.

If I were you I’d find someone selling feeder guppies. They aren’t nearly as expensive and then you can start off with a good amount to get you going.
Breeding worms might also be something you’ll want to look into or consider. Turtles go nuts for them. At least mine do.
