the majority of locally owned shops prefer to get locally bred fish, some easy to breed fish just aren't practical for shops to buy... examples include livebearers (unless you're dealing with some impressive strains) CA cidhlids (the market for them is too small to buy any number of them on a regular basis) and Bettas (are too expensive to raise and come dirt cheap from major distributors)

Fish that are good to breed for shops include cory cats, angelfish, discus, killifish, or the big one I'm surprised more people don't get into is glofish, the genetically modified danios. Contrary to popular belief they are fertile. It is technically illegal to sell them for profit since their genome is copyrighted, but there's nothing preventing you from exchanging them for credit.

If you're thinking about breeding SW fish be prepared for a tremendous investment of time and money, the required facilites to raise the fry to a sellable size take up about 200 square feet per species and cost at least 150K to set up. If you've got more cash than I've ever seen in one place burning a hole in your pocket and access to cheap climate controlled warehouse space breeding clownfish might be a great side project for you.

Where do these people get there info from? :screwy: :ROFL:

150K to Breed Clown Fish!!:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

I had a buddy who breed them for 10 years plus. In a little fish store he owned.. The shop WHOLE was worth like 10 g's. ;)

some good advise 'n bad.. as always.. 150K? to breed clowns?.. I had a pair breeding in my 40 Gal at home for years. tried raising the fry a few times, Pain in the tuckus. green water, brine fry.. billion 2lt coke bottles everywhere.. air hoses.. to heck w/ it! lol.. I wouldn't reccomend it either unless you've kept SW at least for awhile. Challenging, and from bare nothing to set-up your looking somewhere reasonable in the 1k+ range.

petco, and Petsmart indeed will not trade you fish or give you credit. They will however "take" fish.

Find out whats "hot" in your area. and Pick a species you like!

Angel's and Discus Both need decent sized breeding set-ups to do comfortably unless you plan on bare bottom tanks and looking at it from a "commercial" point of view.

Cichlids can be alot of fun. I've found lately it's hard to find some of the African Cichlids that where once very common. brichardi's, Lelupei, auratus, and a variety of the others can easily be bred in 10gal+ tanks on a pair by tank basis. Are colorful, personality inclined, and generally not hard to breed. BUt also do not have large litters but do breed often. w/ a petco/petsmart nearby though may be harder to get value for them. private shops ime have to deal w/ the exotics more often then the "common" to keep customers. Rams, kribs, ect may also be something to look into as petco and petsmart as far as I'm aware do not carry these. at least where I am they do not. IMO those types of fish will be your best bet.

Also be a good idea to list what tank size your looking at and your idea of spending, to get more exact suggetsions.

The big box stores won't take them and the little "mom and pop" places won't pay enough to make it worth it anyway

id say you should look at it from a fun recreational point of view and if you manage to make some money on the side then good.

local fish stores will usually offer you below wholesale price for you fish. I know someone who sold a whole spawn of angel fish for 35 dollars. You are better off advertising and selling them yourself.

I also know someone who bred discus at his house. He sold them out of his home and was making 500-800 dollars a month, this is why i created my website to help hobbyists who have bred nice fish at home.

like some people said your gonna spend more money on breeding than u recieving back from ur lfs. i rather sell mine to people rather than trading them in for store credit. store crdit takes along time to built up haha

sell them yourself, youll make more money
